Immigration Defense Clinic

Student attorneys in Professor Chapin’s legal Clinic at CU Law defend immigrants in a wide variety of legal matters, specializing at the nexus of criminal and immigration law. Professor Chapin and her students appear in both state and federal court on behalf of noncitizen clients, and also file affirmative immigration applications including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) petitions. The Clinic operates on the academic schedule and typically takes cases during the academic calendar, from August-May.

Free Legal Clinic

Professor Chapin’s Clinic provides 100% free representation with some funding available to assist with DACA renewal fees. There is limited capacity for the cases they take, but Professor Chapin and her students can provide free consultations and referrals for clients that the Clinic is unable to take. For criminal cases, you must be a resident of Boulder County, and charged with a misdemeanor offense to qualify for assistance in the Clinic. Prof. Chapin’s Clinic can provide representation and/or discuss immigration matters with all Colorado residents.

Types of Cases

  • Non-citizens/undocumented people with pending misdemeanor criminal cases charged in Boulder County
  • Federal immigration cases
  • DACA applications
  • Asylum (one per year)
